The Project

Brazil stands as a megadiverse nation, harboring a significant portion of the world’s documented biodiversity, while also grappling with numerous threatened species and habitats across its biomes, notably the Brazilian Atlantic Forest.

The Brazilian Atlantic Forest emerges as one of the most imperiled natural realms on Earth. Initially spanning approximately 15% of Brazil’s territory, this forest adorned the coastal stretches across 14 states. However, a succession of economic activities, tracing back to the nation’s colonial history, has significantly depleted its expanse. Presently, a mere 12.5% of the original biome area remains forested, predominantly comprised of degraded, fragmented patches of secondary forests.

Prioritizing forest landscape restoration becomes imperative for all Brazilian biomes, with particular emphasis on the Atlantic Forest. Moreover, fostering community engagement and empowerment in restoration practices is essential. By involving people as decision-makers, imparting the significance of such endeavors, and enabling them to reap the benefits, sustainable restoration efforts can be truly impactful.
