The Project

Reforestation in Germany, including Saxony, is of paramount importance due to its significant environmental, social, and economic impacts. With forests covering around one-third of Germany’s land area, they play a crucial role in carbon sequestration, biodiversity conservation, soil protection, and water regulation.

In Saxony, forests cover approximately 28% of the state’s territory, making them a vital component of the region’s landscape and ecosystem. However, like much of Germany, Saxony’s forests face numerous challenges, including climate change, pests, diseases, and land-use changes. For instance, the spread of pests such as the bark beetle has resulted in substantial tree mortality, leading to degraded forest areas and increased susceptibility to further disturbances.

Data from the Saxon State Forests show that significant investments have been made in reforesting degraded areas and expanding forest cover. For example, between 2010 and 2020, over 15,000 hectares of forest were planted or regenerated in Saxony, representing a substantial contribution to reforestation efforts in the region.

Furthermore, reforestation initiatives in Saxony are guided by sustainable forest management practices aimed at enhancing ecosystem resilience and promoting biodiversity. The State Ministry for Energy, Climate Protection, Environment, and Agriculture in Saxony plays a crucial role in implementing policies and strategies to support reforestation and forest conservation efforts.
