The Project

In August 2021, the Richard Spring Fire ravaged southern Montana, scorching around 68,000 hectares (170,000 acres) of land, including parts of the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation. This led to mandatory evacuation and displacement of local communities, as the fire destroyed numerous homes. Unfortunately, the wildfire also devastated the native Ponderosa pine forests, which are essential habitats for local biodiversity, including Elks, Grizzly Bears, Wolves, Deers, Black Bears, and other critical species. The Northern Cheyenne communities have lost their hunting and fishing grounds due to the fire, and human intervention is now necessary to restore the area.

To address this issue, we aim to plant Ponderosa pines on the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation, in collaboration with our partner, American Forests, and the local communities. Through this initiative, we can restore the crucial hunting and fishing grounds for the Northern Cheyenne Tribes and create prime habitats for the local wildlife to thrive again. However, the success of this project depends on ensuring the survival of the trees during the first 15 years, which is the key challenge. Juvenile trees are more susceptible to low-intensity fires, and once they mature enough to withstand fires, the forest can continue to grow and regenerate without further human intervention.
