Due to a century of fire suppression practices in the United States, numerous forests across the country have become dangerously overgrown. This phenomenon, exacerbated by the impacts of climate change, has created optimal conditions for the occurrence of megafires. Megafires are wildfires that surpass a staggering size of 40,500 hectares (100,000 acres) or more.

The consequences of megafires became evident in 2020 when Labor Day windstorms triggered the simultaneous outbreak of five megafires in Oregon, accompanied by an additional 12 smaller fires. This catastrophic event resulted in the destruction of a significant portion of Oregon’s timber harvest and future timber supply. Moreover, local communities were forcibly displaced, and critical wildlife habitats were lost in the wake of the fires.

To address these challenges, this project endeavors to restore the affected areas by planting a diverse range of tree species. These species will be carefully selected to not only represent the local ecosystem but also possess the necessary adaptability to withstand the changing climate. Among the trees to be planted are resilient species such as Douglas-fir, Noble-fir, and Western Red Cedar. By reintroducing these trees, the initiative aims to restore wildlife habitats that have been adversely impacted by the megafires. Species such as Deer, Elk, Cougar, Bear, Trout, and the iconic Spotted Owl will benefit from the restored habitats, ensuring the preservation of these vital wildlife populations.
