Introduction

Protecting forests is crucial in the fight against climate change and biodiversity loss. Evertreen's "Guardians of the Forest" project in Vohidahy, Madagascar, is a testament to this commitment. This article explores how Evertreen collaborates with local communities to safeguard natural forests, enhance sustainable land management, and support environmental education.

Project Overview

Guardians of the Forest
The "Guardians of the Forest" are a dedicated team of 22 community members in Vohidahy, Madagascar. These individuals devote their time to protecting the forest from illegal logging and burning. They conduct patrols, educate villagers on forest conservation, and monitor forest conditions, playing a critical role in preserving 8,021 hectares of natural forest.

Objectives of the Project
The primary goal is to safeguard 8,021 hectares of natural forest. To achieve this, we engage local communities in forest management through the creation of the "Guardians of the Forest" team. We provide training and technical support to improve sustainable forest management practices and develop agroforestry solutions for illegally occupied lands to reduce pressure on the forest ecosystem. Additionally, we aim to build lasting relationships between local communities and supporters to ensure continuous forest protection.

Context and Challenges

Geographic and Ecological Context
Vohidahy is located in the Amoron'i Mania region, about 50 kilometers east of Ambositra. The area is known for its rich biodiversity and ecotourism potential, with natural attractions such as waterfalls, caves, and the Mananjary River. However, the forest faces significant threats from slash-and-burn agriculture (tavy) and illegal logging.

Main Challenges
The main challenges include deforestation due to illegal logging and tavy practices, which lead to significant loss of forest cover and biodiversity. Local communities often rely on immediate economic returns from logging and agriculture, which can conflict with conservation efforts. Additionally, there is a lack of funds for forest patrols and conservation activities, posing a challenge to effective forest management.

Evertreen's Approach

Training and Support
Evertreen provides comprehensive training to the "Guardians of the Forest" on sustainable forest management, fire control, pasture management, and biodiversity conservation. These sessions are held at the Tsiry Parma Agricultural Training Center, equipping the guardians with the necessary skills to protect the forest effectively.

Monthly Patrols and Awareness Campaigns
The "Guardians of the Forest" conduct monthly patrols and awareness campaigns in local villages. These activities, carried out over five days each month, help monitor the forest and educate the community about the importance of conservation.

Annual Missions
Twice a year, extended missions are conducted involving local guardians, a Tsiry Parma technician, and four forest agents. These missions, lasting eight days each, focus on intensive forest monitoring and community engagement.

Agroforestry Alternatives
Evertreen promotes agroforestry as a sustainable alternative to illegal land use. By introducing fruit tree cultivation, honey production, and forestry, the project aims to provide economic benefits while reducing pressure on the forest.

Community Engagement
Engaging the local community is key to the project's success. Evertreen fosters strong relationships with villagers, ensuring they are active participants in conservation efforts. This includes sharing videos and stories of the guardians' activities with supporters in Italy, fostering a sense of global involvement and support.

Project Impact

Environmental Benefits
Evertreen’s tree planting initiatives have numerous environmental benefits. The project protects and manages 8,021 hectares of forest sustainably, helping to preserve the region’s rich biodiversity and reducing illegal logging and slash-and-burn practices. Effective fire control measures decrease the incidence of forest fires, protecting the ecosystem.

Social and Economic Benefits
Community Empowerment: Local guardians receive training and support, empowering them to take an active role in forest conservation. Sustainable Livelihoods: Agroforestry projects provide alternative income sources, improving the economic stability of local communities. Educational Opportunities: The project promotes environmental education, raising awareness about the importance of forest conservation.

Strengthening Connections
Supporters in Italy can follow the project's progress through regular updates, videos, and visits to Madagascar. This connection helps build a strong network of global environmental stewards committed to protecting forests.

Conclusion

Evertreen's "Guardians of the Forest" project exemplifies the power of community-driven conservation efforts. By protecting and managing forests in Madagascar, promoting sustainable land use, and fostering global connections, Evertreen is making a significant impact on the environment and local communities. As we face the urgent challenges of climate change and deforestation, projects like these offer hope and a pathway to a more sustainable future.
