Reforestation vs. Afforestation: Definitions and Key Differences

15 Nov 2024 in Green living

As climate change continues to challenge us, two important strategies stand out: reforestation and afforestation. Sure, both involve planting trees, but they’re not the same—they serve different goals and affect ecosystems in unique ways. At Evertreen, we’re all about sustainability, and our Tree Planting Project uses both approaches to make a meaningful impact in the battle against climate change.

What is Reforestation?

Reforestation means bringing back trees to areas where forests once thrived but were cleared or destroyed. It’s a game-changer for fixing ecosystems damaged by deforestation caused by logging, farming, or urban growth. By replanting these areas, reforestation doesn’t just soak up carbon dioxide (CO2); it also creates much-needed homes for wildlife. In fact, the Global Forest Resources Assessment 2020 by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) found that reforestation could help restore an estimated 900 million hectares of degraded land globally, significantly improving biodiversity and carbon sequestration.

At Evertreen, we’re proud to have planted over a million trees through our Tree Planting Project. This work has helped restore biodiversity and improve soil health. In fact, research shows reforested areas can support up to 60% more biodiversity than barren land. For example, a study published in the journal Nature found that reforestation could increase biodiversity by providing habitat for many species that are otherwise threatened by habitat loss. Reforestation can also help increase local water retention and improve soil fertility, which is crucial for the long-term health of the ecosystem. That’s a big win for ecosystems and a huge step toward sustainability.

But it doesn’t stop there. Reforestation prevents soil erosion, improves water quality, and even moderates local climates. As trees grow, their roots hold the soil together, reducing runoff and stopping sediment from clogging rivers and lakes—critical for flood- and landslide-prone areas. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) estimates that replanting trees could help reduce the risk of flooding in many regions by stabilizing the soil and enhancing natural water filtration. Trees also help restore local water cycles by increasing precipitation and reducing the risk of droughts in some areas. Reforestation can even moderate temperature extremes, reducing the urban heat island effect in cities. Trees also bring back key ecosystem services like pollination and nutrient recycling, both essential for keeping the planet healthy.

What is Afforestation?

Afforestation is a little different—it’s about planting trees in areas that haven’t been forests before, or at least not in recent history. While reforestation focuses on reviving forests we’ve lost, afforestation creates brand-new ones. This expands the planet’s tree cover and gives wildlife entirely new homes. The FAO estimates that approximately 1.2 billion hectares of land globally are suitable for afforestation, offering significant opportunities for ecological restoration and carbon sequestration.

A standout example? Africa’s Great Green Wall. This ambitious project aims to restore 100 million hectares of land across the Sahel region to fight desertification. But it’s not just about planting trees—it’s a multi-purpose effort that tackles climate change, creates jobs, supports farming, and boosts local biodiversity. By increasing tree cover, the Great Green Wall stabilizes soil, conserves water, and helps regulate the climate in a region under intense environmental stress. According to a 2021 report by the African Union, the Great Green Wall has already helped restore over 20 million hectares of land, benefiting local communities and ecosystems. The project aims to not only reduce desertification but also enhance food security and increase local livelihoods by creating jobs in tree planting, agroforestry, and ecosystem management.

Afforestation projects are also great tools for businesses looking to reduce their carbon footprint. By funding new forests, companies can offset emissions, hit climate targets, and make a real difference. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) suggests that afforestation could potentially offset up to 1.1 gigatons of CO2 emissions annually by 2050 if implemented on a global scale. At Evertreen, we’ve made afforestation a key part of our Corporate Planting initiatives, helping businesses showcase their commitment to sustainability. It’s a win-win: companies help the environment and connect with eco-conscious customers at the same time. This growing demand for afforestation has driven the global market for carbon credits, providing businesses with an economic incentive to participate in these projects.

In regions prone to natural disasters, afforestation can be a lifesaver—literally. Newly planted trees stabilize the soil and manage water runoff, cutting the risk of floods and landslides. The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) estimates that afforestation and similar nature-based solutions could reduce flood risk by up to 30% in vulnerable areas. As more people recognize these wide-ranging benefits, afforestation efforts are gaining serious momentum. It’s a powerful approach to restoring the environment and driving economic growth, all at once. Afforestation can also improve local air quality, reduce noise pollution, and provide recreational spaces for communities, further enhancing quality of life.
