As ESG standards tighten, companies are moving beyond simple offsetting toward programs that deliver measurable, multi-benefit impact.

What counts as nature-based
The category is broader than tree planting, and the differences matter when choosing where to put a budget:
- Reforestation and restoration — re-establishing forest on land that recently lost it. Predictable ecological payoff and the most common corporate entry point.
- Forest conservation — protecting standing forest from clearance. High value when the threat is real, and entirely dependent on a credible baseline.
- Mangrove and coastal restoration — exceptional carbon storage in sediment plus storm protection for the communities behind them.
- Soil and agricultural practices — large in aggregate, slow to measure, harder to certify.
- Grassland and peatland protection — among the most valuable per hectare, and often the least fundable precisely because nothing is being planted.

What makes a nature-based program credible
Restoration projects rebuild landscapes affected by deforestation, agriculture or degradation, gradually increasing carbon absorption as forests recover. But credibility depends on proof: the work must be traceable and reportable, not assumed. That means geolocated planting, field monitoring, and data a company can cite in its disclosures.
Five questions separate a programme from a press release:
- Can you locate an individual site or tree? Coordinates, not a country.
- Who maintains it, and for how long? The first three years decide survival, and maintenance is where cheap programmes cut corners.
- Are species native and site-appropriate?
- Is survival monitored and reported honestly, including what failed?
- Is the carbon methodology published, or is there just a headline number?
Where the risks sit
Nature-based programmes carry three technical risks that any serious buyer should be able to discuss: permanence, since carbon in biomass can be released by fire, disease or clearance; additionality, meaning whether the outcome would have happened anyway, which is the substance behind the criticism of some forest-protection credits; and leakage, where pressure simply moves to the next valley. The claims risk is separate and equally real. Nature-based contributions do not count towards science-based reduction targets, and from 27 September 2026 the EU restricts marketing a product to consumers as carbon neutral on the basis of offsetting. Report the reduction and the contribution as two numbers.
