Support Reforestation: Global Movement to Offset Carbon Footprint

Supporting reforestation is one of the few climate actions an individual or a company can take that produces something you can point to on a map — but it works as a footprint response only when the trees are located, maintained and honestly accounted for. The global movement behind it is real and growing; so is the gap between projects that restore ecosystems and projects that publish planting numbers.
Why reforestation attracts so much attention
- It is available now. Unlike most engineered removal, it can be funded today at a cost almost any budget can absorb.
- It does several jobs at once. Carbon, biodiversity, soil stabilisation, water regulation and rural employment come from the same spend.
- It is legible. A forest is something people understand without a briefing, which is why it engages staff and customers where an efficiency project does not.
- It is repairable damage. Deforestation is one of the few large emission sources where the physical reversal is straightforward in principle.
Where the movement is actually happening
Three broad strands, each with different strengths:
- Tropical restoration. The fastest biomass accumulation and the highest biodiversity return, in the regions that have lost the most forest cover. It is also where local employment matters most to whether the forest survives.
- Mangrove and coastal restoration. Exceptional carbon storage in sediment, plus flood and storm protection for the communities behind them.
- Landscape and degraded-land restoration. Slower, less photogenic, and often the most valuable per hectare where erosion or desertification is advancing.
Urban tree planting is worth mentioning separately: excellent for shade, air quality and liveability, modest for carbon at national scale. It is a public-health intervention with a carbon side effect rather than the reverse.
What separates restoration from planting numbers
- Species matched to the site. Native species that belong there, not the fastest grower available.
- Maintenance funded for years, not days. Survival is decided in the first three growing seasons.
- Local people paid. A forest with a local economic reason to stand is a forest that stands.
- Monitoring and honest reporting, including survival rates and what failed.

Using reforestation against your own footprint
The sequence that holds up: measure, reduce, then compensate the residual. Reforestation belongs in the third step, and it is a long-duration removal — a tree absorbs carbon over decades rather than in the year you fund it. How to support it without overclaiming
Two sentences keep almost anyone safe. Say what you funded, with numbers and places. Say it alongside — never instead of — what you cut. Purchased credits do not count towards science-based reduction targets, and from 27 September 2026 EU rules restrict marketing a product to consumers as carbon neutral on the basis of offsetting. Contribution language is both safer and, in practice, more convincing than a badge.
