Across 26,510 acres of mature eastern Oregon forest, four tree species form a multi-canopy, fire-resilient ecosystem that has been growing for decades. In 2021, the family that owns this forest received state approval to commercially log 4,000 acres of it. They walked away from the permit. This project keeps that decision in place for the next 40 years.

When you adopt a tree in Oregon through Evertreen, your contribution goes directly to the Double Bar IFM Project (American Carbon Registry Project ACR922) in Wheeler County, Oregon. This is an American Carbon Registry-registered improved forest management project, protecting 26,510 acres of mature Douglas fir, ponderosa pine, western larch, and oak from commercial timber harvest.

Your trees fund three areas of work:

Deferred harvest on 26,510 acres. No commercial timber harvest takes place on the project area for the full 40-year term. Only small-scale fuel reduction work is permitted, removing understory fuels that intensify wildfire without touching the carbon-storing overstory.

Habitat structure for wildlife. Active retention of snags and coarse woody debris supports cavity-nesting birds, small mammals, amphibians, and the large herds of elk and deer the family is committed to maintaining. Riparian buffers around the property's fish-bearing streams stay undisturbed.

A 40-year legal commitment. The landowner has signed a Reversal Risk Mitigation Agreement with the American Carbon Registry and Winrock International, with 24% of every credit set aside in the ACR buffer pool as a permanence guarantee.

The property sits within the John Day River drainage basin, supporting watersheds that feed one of the last major Pacific Northwest rivers with wild, self-sustaining runs of summer steelhead and spring Chinook salmon. This project holds American Carbon Registry registration and was independently validated and verified by SCS Global Services. 776,865 tCO₂e were verified in the first reporting period, with an additional 245,326 tCO₂e held in the ACR buffer pool as a permanence reserve. Every number on this page has been independently verified.
