Evertreen vs Tree-Nation: Cheap Trees or Provable Impact?

Tree-Nation wins on raw price — if the goal is the biggest tree count for the budget, it's hard to beat €0.35 trees. But cheap trees you can't trace are hard to defend in ESG reporting. Evertreen geolocates and satellite-monitors every tree, films the planting, and can add Verra- or Gold Standard-certified offsets — so your claims stand up to scrutiny, and your brand gets forests, videos and PR out of it.

For credible corporate impact, Evertreen is the safer investment; for volume-first campaigns on a tight budget, Tree-Nation has its place.

A tree at €0.35 and a tree at £1.5 are not the same product, and the gap is not margin. Cost per planted tree is driven by four things, and cheap programmes economise on the last two:

Seedling and labour costs vary enormously by country, and a genuinely low price can simply reflect where the planting happens.
Site preparation — clearing, fencing and protection from grazing.
Maintenance for the first three years, which is when survival is actually decided.
Monitoring and verification — the GPS records, imagery and field inventory that let anyone check the result.

This is why the honest comparison is not cost per tree planted but cost per tree still alive and demonstrable in five years. A thousand cheap seedlings with no maintenance budget can easily deliver less than three hundred maintained ones, and only one of those outcomes survives a customer asking for proof.

None of that makes a low price wrong. It makes it a question worth asking — of any supplier, including this one.

Volume is the right goal when the number itself is the point: a campaign built around a headline figure, a match-funding drive, or a cause where scale communicates commitment. Tree-Nation is well set up for that, with company forests and its own certificates.

Verifiability is the right goal when the trees will appear in ESG reporting, a customer-facing claim or a procurement questionnaire. There, an unverifiable tree has negative value: it invites a question you cannot answer.

If you are unsure which you are doing, write the sentence you intend to publish first. It usually settles the argument.

Can you locate an individual tree? A country is not traceability; a coordinate is.
Who maintains the site, and are they paid for it? The first three years decide survival, and maintenance is where cheap programmes quietly economise.
What is the measured survival rate, and how was it sampled? Planting counts are easy to publish; survival is the number that reflects whether a forest resulted.
Are the species native and suited to the site? The wrong tree in the wrong place can damage the ecosystem it was sold as helping.
Is the carbon methodology published? A single flattering per-tree figure with no method behind it is the clearest warning sign in this sector.
What exactly may you claim in public? Particularly relevant now that EU rules restrict offset-based carbon-neutral product claims to consumers from 27 September 2026.
