About this project
Beneath the forests of Central Kalimantan lies a peat dome that has been forming for 26,000 years. It stores over 546 million tonnes of carbon underground. Before this project existed, the entire area was earmarked for industrial plantation conversion. This project keeps that from happening.
When you plant a tree in Indonesia through Evertreen, your contribution goes directly to the Katingan Mentaya peatland conservation project in Borneo. This is one of the largest Verra-certified peatland conservation projects in the world, protecting 149,800 hectares of ancient forest from planned industrial conversion.
Your trees fund three areas of work:
Forest patrols and fire prevention. 149,800 hectares monitored year-round. In 2019, despite 82 fire incidents, only 156 hectares of forest were affected.
Native reforestation. 14 Borneo-native species raised in on-site nurseries and planted during the wet season. Over 36,000 trees in the project area. 339 hectares of degraded swamp restored through canal blocking and replanting.
Community programmes. Microfinance, agriculture training, health services, education, and 197 local jobs across 34 villages.
Over 700 species live here, including an estimated 3,385 Bornean Orangutans, more than 5% of the world's remaining population.This project holds VCS certification with CCB Triple Gold status and has been rated AA by both BeZero and Sylvera, placing it in the top 1% of 487 rated global carbon projects.
